There are many stories of how this flute came into being,
here is a simple version of one of them:
Long ago there was a shy young man who did not know what his purpose was to be among his people. One day he set out on a quest to discover what his destiny would be. He walked for a long time and as he walked he came upon an elk and immediately he thought he was to become a great hunter. He chased the elk for many miles until he followed the tracks to an enormous river when he could not swim across. The elk was nowhere in sight.
Feeling tired and downtrodden he lay beneath a cedar tree and fell asleep. He awoke to a strange sound which he had never heard before. He looked around and could see no one. He looked up into the tree and saw a woodpecker hopping on a branch picking out bugs. The woodpecker came down from the tree and turned into a beautiful woman who told him to take the branch back to his tribe and he did. No one in the village could tell him how it worked so the wisest man in the village told him to take it back to the place he found it and then he might figure it out. So the young man took it back and waited and waited but nothing happened. He held it up into the air and the wind began to blow. There was the magic sound again. When the wind stopped so did the sound.
He took a breath and blew into the end of the hollowed branch and a sound came forth. There were holes pecked into the wood from the woodpecker and as each hole was covered there was a different sound. He took it back to the village and showed it to his people. As he played the young girls swooned and it became an instrument of love. The girl he loved but could never tell heard his song and soon after they were married. And that is one story of how the flute came to be.
